Small Blessing | Cow Devil

COW DEVIL
My wife is a glass artist and when she and I were invited to take part in a gallery show of collaborative work we were thrilled. That is until we actually got around to deciding what we would do. It turned into an artistic turf war. Thematically I'm inclined toward darker imagery. Catharine is all sweetness and light. We decided we would each have to do what we really wanted to do and we would figure out a way to make the two elements work together. I had been researching gargoyles and grotesques found on European cathedrals and I particularly enjoyed a "cow devil" found on a church near Brussels. Catharine had been delving into the "divine feminine". We decided to hinge the cow devil's wings and place Catharine's image of a lovely feminine figure dangling her toe into a stream inside the cow devil's chest. The image is cast glass, reverse painted. That is, painted on the cast image on the back side of the glass panel.
